Yes East Kilbride is a grassroots campaign organisation representing all the communities’ across the town of East Kilbride. It is our primary belief that Scotland’s future should be fully and completely in the hands of those best placed to lead Scotland forward, and that is the people who live and work in Scotland.
Our nation is blessed with an embarrassment of natural resources ranging from oil, gas & renewable energy to 90 percent of the UK’s total fresh water supply. But of course our most valuable asset is in the people who are the bedrock of our strong, welcoming, and industrious society. It is now without dispute that if we connect the wealth of our land to the well-being of our people, we can create a better country for all our people.
Scotland is of course a wealthy country, even with the exclusion of offshore oil and gas our economy is still bigger than countries such as Italy, New Zealand, Japan or South Korea, and yet one fifth of Scotland’s people live in poverty, 60 percent of which are in full-time employment (The working poor). And devastatingly a quarter of all children in Scotland live in poverty. This is wholly unacceptable.
It is primarily these facts which are further compounded with the regular and consistent erosion of our services and infrastructure, which confirm that Scotland’s people are not being prioritised under the limitations of devolution.
In this era of the post Brexit United Kingdom, it is now beyond doubt that Scotland must take a different path in order to reach our potential. And that potential can only be achieved once the people of Scotland retake full governance and control of our nation under Independence. Only with Independence, can we take different decisions, and use our vast resources and wealth to build a better society for all of Scotland’s people.
Under independence, Scotland would take its place as a responsible member of the international community while continuing as a friend and good neighbour to the other nations of these islands, continuing the strong social union which will always bind us together.
Yes East Kilbride is also fuelled by the prospect of a successful, prosperous, and thriving community of East Kilbride. Sadly our membership have witnessed, and indeed endured the significant wholesale destructive changes to the town over the years under the stewardship of the South Lanarkshire Council.
Our evidence based position is that the majority of decisions taken in relation to the town in recent years do not have the best interests of the town or its inhabitants at their heart. Today we observe the once greatest, and most successful of all the new town projects in Scotland, crumble, and implode as a barely recognisable husk of its former self. Further demonstrated with the current plan to liquidate our town centre, and close down critical community services such as libraries, sports clubs and community centres.
This predicament is simply not acceptable, as such it is a core pillar of Yes East Kilbride to support all communities across the town, in every way we possibly can. To fight against this programme of vandalism, and stand firmly and where applicable lead on all campaigns. Whether that be to oppose the construction of battery or solar farms on our greenbelt, or the ongoing plan to deindustrialise, and condemn us to the fate of a traffic laden commuter town. We will continue to support every demographic to return the authority from insufficient council and politically motivated authorities and back into the hands of our fellow East Kilbridians.
